Using a deer shedding her antlers as a metaphor for gender transition, I aimed to create a painting that felt triumphant and personal.

Process

Sketched and planned different compositions
Picked a composition and translated sketch to digital
Refined colors and shapes, rendered. Chose colors that appear on the transgender flag as a color scheme.

Challenges

Convey a metaphor without using words is always an interesting challenge. It's always a balancing act trying not to hit the viewer over the head with the message, but still make it obvious enough to be meaningful.
